The Best Whipped Body Butter Recipe for Dry Skin

This is the best whipped body butter recipe for dry skin. It’s been tested in the dry heat of Arizona where I live, and I can attest to its effectiveness! It would no doubt be just as soothing and moisturizing in the cold, northern winters where forced-air heating is so drying to the skin.

This easy DIY whipped body butter is a blend of luxurious, skin-softening oils and protective, shea butter. Unlike a lotion which requires a blend of oil and water, body butter is “anhydrous” meaning it does not contain water. This means it’s so much easier to make and has a much longer shelf life than homemade lotions. The texture is light, soft and it melts almost instantly when gently massaged into the skin. It’s best applied just after a shower or bath when the skin is slightly damp, and it also makes a lovely massage balm.

Pure Shea Butter

The oils in this whipped body butter were specifically chosen to nourish and relieve dry skin. Shea butter is rich in skin-loving vitamins, A and E. It is a superb moisturizer with many skin healing properties. To ensure that your shea butter contains the many healthy skin benefits, look for pure, all natural, unrefined shea butter. It will be beige in color, semi-soft, with a characteristic nutty fragrance. Beware of refined shea butter that may be white or another color without the distinctive fragrance. Though you may not love the natural fragrance of pure shea butter, the subtle smell won’t last long on your skin and it is important to ensure that the shea butter is pure. The apricot kernel and jojoba oils soften, tone and revitalize the skin and support the skin’s protective barrier. These nourishing oils also help the finished body butter penetrate more deeply. Hemp oil is rich in beneficial fatty acids, moisturizing to dry skin, rejuvenating and anti-inflammatory. The argan oil boosts skin cell production, increasing elasticity and reducing skins of aging, and helps protect against harsh environmental conditions.

The Best Whipped Body Butter Recipe For Dry Skin

Yields ~ 6-8 ounces

3 oz. (by weight) shea butter, chopped if necessary
2 fl. oz. (60 ml) Apricot Kernel Oil
1 tbsp. (15 ml) Jojoba Oil
2 tsp. (10 ml) Hemp Oil
1 tsp. (5 ml) Argan Oil
Optional: Essential Oils of your choice (5-10 drops per ounce of body butter) 

Place the Apricot Kernel, Jojoba, Hemp and Argan oils in a mason jar and place the jar in a small pot of simmering water (not boiling). You can also use a double boiler to warm the oils if you have one. Allow the oils to warm for about 10 minutes. Place Shea Butter in the jar with the warmed oils. Once the Shea Butter begins to melt remove the pot from the heat. Continue stirring until the Shea Butter is completely melted. The goal is to not overheat the Shea Butter to ensure that the finished body butter is smooth and soft. Overheating the Shea Butter can cause the finished product to become grainey. Carefully remove the mason jar from the pot and wipe water from sides of the jar, being careful not to get water in the oil mixture. Water can contaminate the body butter and reduce its shelf life. 

Pour the warm oil mixture into a mixing bowl. Place in refrigerator to allow to cool, checking every 15 minutes. Once the mixture begins to solidify remove from refrigerator. Using a standing mixer or electric hand mixer, start to whip on low speed and slowly work up to  high speed. Blend until ingredients are incorporated and the butter is light and fluffy. Add essential oils of your choice and blend again to quickly incorporate the essential oils. Scoop into clean containers and label! Store in a cool place, away from heat. Shelf life is usually 1-2 years.
